Global Studies Opportunities

By Caitlyn Minelli and Mallory Sunderland

The Global Studies Department at Wilson College held an informational session in Warfield Hall on March 24 concerning the changes to the program.

The session included refreshments and information on the program itself. The faculty also introduced their two new professors: Assistant Professor of Global Studies Dr. Nicolaos Catsis and Assistant Professor of Spanish Dr. Wendell Smith. These two new professors will add a wealth of diversity and value to the program.

The department has many international programs that were highlighted. Students have in the past gone to places like Mexico and Spain. There is also a regular summer exchange program that takes place with South Korea each year. The faculty has the ability to work with students on individualized study abroad programs that correspond with their specific majors.

Recently, the program has facilitated studies from concentrations related to education all the way to political and cross-cultural studies. It is an extremely flexible program designed to aid students in future professions.

Experience gained in the program provides many routes towards specialization and career choice. Students have the potential to work in international development, human rights, education and communication, as well as gain skills that will serve them well no matter their path in life.

The future holds more opportunities for the department as Vice President of Academic Affairs and Dean of Faculty Elissa Heil has been able to identify more funding by way of scholarships to help the program grow. There are also plans to add Gender Studies and Asian Studies to the program.
