Percy Jackson Book Club

Last week, the interest meeting for a book club discussing the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan took place. During the meeting, the group discussed that they will be reading the second book in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series, The Sea of Monsters. The book club is run by Dr. Bonnie Rock-McCutcheon and hosted by Societas, the classics club. The president of the club is myself, Olivia Shirk.

Last year, the book club started as one of Dr. Rock-McCutcheon’s interests. She wanted to discuss the Percy Jackson series, and so began the club with the first book in the series: The Lightning Thief. Many of us know this book series from middle school days or earlier. The books follow young Percy Jackson, a boy who thought he was a normal kid until he found out he was a demigod, a child born from a god and a human.

The first novel in the series is where he finds out about his demigod status and travels with his friend Grover to Camp Half-Blood, a camp specifically made for young demigods to train and protect them against monsters that would otherwise kill them. This is where he meets his other friend, Annabeth. The children are able to be sent out on missions and quests, which is where the second novel picks up.

While I cannot reveal too much of the book, the book club is meeting every other Monday at 4:30 pm. We are included in the Be Bold Bulletin or you can obtain the link from myself or Dr. Rock-McCutcheon at our Wilson emails. If you do not have the book but would like to join, please contact me and I will get you a book. Come join the literary discussion of myths and monsters, and take a well-deserved break from life!
