Men’s Volleyball Celebrates Back-to-Back Wins

The Wilson Men’s Volleyball team won back-to-back matches in their first games of the season on Saturday, Jan. 27.

The Phoenix won their first match 3-0 against the Wilkes University Colonels, setting the stage for their second 3-0 win of the day against the Misericordia Cougars.

Starting the season undefeated, the team now looks toward improving their game. When asked during a team press conference how he felt about the wins, Outside Hitter/Setter Ian Firestone ‘20 felt confident moving forward.

“I feel for the most part they went pretty well,” said Firestone. “I think it was good that we faced a little bit of adversity in the second set in the Misericordia match because I feel like that there are going to be a lot of times throughout the season we’re going to face different types of adversity. And seeing how we respond under pressure and under that type of stress is good for kind of giving ourselves a baseline for the rest of the season, and knowing we can overcome it.”

Outside Hitter Aaron Hoke ’19—going into his third season with the Phoenix—feels the same.

“It’s the first time in Wilson’s history for the men’s team that we’ve had two wins, so it feels nice to be undefeated for a little bit,” said Hoke. “And it feels nice to get two wins because they were hard to come by in years past.”

While the Phoenix took pride in their accomplishment, players remained humble and stressed that this is just the beginning of the season.

“Positive thinking. Practice a lot,” said Outside Hitter Luis Cevallos ‘21 when asked what the team needs to do to continue their winning streak. “Because these two wins mean a lot, but it’s just the beginning.”

Phoenix Men’s Volleyball will face off with Bard College and Keuka College beginning at 12:00 p.m. in Annandale on the Hudson, NY on Saturday, Feb. 3.
